What is a warehouse guardrail?

A warehouse guardrail is a physical safety barrier used to separate forklifts and other workplace vehicles from pedestrians, buildings, machinery, loading areas and other vulnerable assets. Warehouse guardrails are commonly installed along pedestrian walkways, around plant and equipment, at loading docks and near pallet racking.

What does a 40 kN Type G vehicle barrier mean?

A 40 kN Type G barrier relates to medium vehicle traffic areas. AS/NZS 1170.1 defines these as areas used by vehicles exceeding 2,500 kg but not exceeding 10,000 kg gross mass. The specified vehicle barrier action is 40 kN acting at 1.0 m above floor level.

Does AS 2890.2 apply to warehouse loading areas and truck facilities?

AS 2890.2:2018 applies to the layout of off-street commercial vehicle facilities, including loading, unloading, access and manoeuvring areas. It should not, however, be treated as a universal impact-rating standard for warehouse guardrails; the required barrier performance still needs to suit the vehicles and hazards involved.

What impact rating should a warehouse forklift barrier have?

There is no single impact rating that is automatically correct for every warehouse. Forklift mass, load, travel speed, impact angle, traffic route and the consequence of an impact should all be considered. A barrier intended for passenger-car impacts should not automatically be assumed suitable for every forklift or industrial vehicle application.

When do I need a 40 kN car park barrier?

A 40 kN Type G barrier may be required where areas are used by vehicles heavier than those covered by the Type F light-vehicle category. The project engineer should confirm the applicable traffic classification.

What is the difference between 30 kN and 40 kN car park barriers?

The key difference is the design vehicle category and prescribed impact action. A 40 kN Type G application relates to heavier vehicles than a 30 kN Type F application and also considers impact at a different height.
