TfNSW Type 1 pedestrian fencing is a steel pedestrian-control fence based on the Transport for NSW R0800 Fencing Series. It is used to guide pedestrians toward designated crossings and discourage uncontrolled access to the roadway. Type 1 is the familiar flat-top configuration and is widely specified for road verges, intersections, school zones, pedestrian crossings, transport corridors and other locations where predictable pedestrian movement is important.
Yes. ‘RMS Type 1’ is the legacy industry term for the pedestrian fencing formerly associated with Roads and Maritime Services. Roads and Maritime Services functions now sit within Transport for NSW, so current project documentation may refer to TfNSW pedestrian fencing, the R0800 Fencing Series, RMS fencing or RTA-style fencing. When specifying a new project, the current TfNSW standard drawings and project requirements should take precedence.
Type 1 pedestrian fencing is detailed in the TfNSW R0800 Fencing Series. The standard Type 1 verge panel is associated with drawing R0800-15 and the Type 1 median panel with R0800-16, together with the relevant post, footing, base-plate and general fencing details. Designers and contractors should check the current TfNSW issue of the R0800 series when preparing specifications, shop drawings and procurement schedules.
Verge and median panels are configured for different positions relative to traffic. The orientation of the internal flats is arranged to preserve sight lines for motorists and pedestrians approaching from the relevant direction. This is why a verge panel should not simply be substituted for a median panel, or vice versa. The project drawings should clearly identify which configuration is required along each fence run.
The standard R0800 pedestrian-fencing arrangement is generally based on posts at 2,000 mm centres. Shorter bays can sometimes be required at ends, corners or constrained locations, but increasing the spacing beyond the standard drawing should not be assumed to be compliant. Any non-standard panel length or post spacing should be coordinated against the current TfNSW drawings and the project designer’s requirements.
Yes. Type 1 pedestrian fencing can be supplied for base-plated or in-ground post installations, subject to the applicable R0800 post details and the project’s substrate and civil design. Base-plated posts can suit concrete footpaths, bridges and other formed surfaces, while in-ground posts are commonly used in verge applications. The footing or fixing arrangement should be confirmed before ordering so the correct posts and components are supplied.
Type 1 is commonly specified beside busy roads, at intersections, school zones, pedestrian crossings, refuge approaches, transport corridors, overpasses and public precincts where pedestrians need to be guided away from unsafe crossing points. It is particularly useful where the project requires a recognised TfNSW R0800 configuration rather than a generic tubular or decorative fence. Final location and layout remain matters for the road or project designer.
