TfNSW Type 2 is one of the six standard pedestrian-fence configurations in the R0800 Fencing Series. It performs the same core pedestrian-control function as the other R0800 types but has a different architectural profile, including distinctive round balusters above the main panel. It can be selected where the road authority, council, architect or landscape designer wants a more decorative appearance while retaining a recognised TfNSW fencing configuration.
The main difference is the panel profile rather than a simple increase in ‘strength’ or safety rating. Type 1 has the familiar flat-top appearance, while Type 2 incorporates additional decorative round balusters above the principal panel. Both sit within the TfNSW R0800 pedestrian-fencing family and are intended to control pedestrian movement. The required type should therefore be selected from the project drawings rather than substituted solely on appearance or price.
The TfNSW R0800 Fencing Series identifies Type 2 verge fencing on drawing R0800-17 and Type 2 median fencing on R0800-18, together with the general post and installation details that apply to the fence system. These drawing references are useful in specifications and tender schedules because they remove ambiguity over the required panel profile and traffic-side orientation.
Type 2 can be appropriate where pedestrian control is required but the streetscape calls for a more detailed architectural treatment than the standard Type 1 profile. This can include residential streets, shopping precincts, roundabouts, council upgrades and public-realm works. The selection should still be coordinated with the relevant road authority or asset owner because the visual preference does not replace the need to comply with the project’s TfNSW or council requirements.
For NSW classified-road applications, the key references include the current TfNSW R0800 Fencing Series and the current TfNSW technical direction for installation of pedestrian fencing on NSW classified roads. Fabrication requirements can also call up relevant Australian Standards such as AS/NZS 1554.1 for structural steel welding and the applicable coating standards. The contract documents should always be checked because project-specific requirements can add to the standard drawings.
The internal bar orientation is a deliberate sight-line feature. Verge and median panels face different traffic and pedestrian approach conditions, so the arrangement is configured to help maintain visibility through the fence from the appropriate direction. Correct orientation is therefore more than an aesthetic detail. Panels should be ordered and installed to match the verge or median designation shown on the road-design drawings.
Yes. Steel pedestrian fencing is commonly hot-dip galvanised for corrosion protection and can also be powder coated where the project calls for a particular streetscape colour. Satin black and heritage-style colours are common selections, while other colours can be project-specific. The required coating system, colour and any TfNSW or council coating requirements should be nominated before manufacture so the finish can be priced and documented correctly.
Request the applicable R0800 panel drawings, post and fixing details, product data, welding documentation, coating information and any project-specific supply drawings needed for the tender or construction package. For larger projects, also confirm the verge-versus-median quantities, mounting method and required finish. This gives the architect, civil engineer, contractor and fencing subcontractor a consistent basis for specification and procurement.
