The difference between Verge & Median panel designs is the pattern of the centre bars. These are angled to provide drivers with an unobstructed view of pedestrians or oncoming traffic.
Type 5 is a standard R0800 pedestrian-fence configuration used where pedestrians need to be guided away from unsafe road crossings while the project also calls for a more detailed streetscape appearance. It can be used on road verges, medians, school-zone works, arterial-road upgrades, intersections and other public spaces where Type 5 is nominated by the road authority or project designer.
Type 5 verge fencing is identified by R0800-23 and Type 5 median fencing by R0800-24 within the TfNSW Fencing Series. The full installation also relies on the applicable post, footing, base-plate, general and decorative details. Contractors should price against the complete drawing set because the panel drawing alone may not capture all components required for the finished fence run.
Both are TfNSW R0800 pedestrian-control fence configurations, but their profiles are different. Type 1 is the simpler flat-top arrangement and is widely recognised across NSW road projects, while Type 5 provides a more decorative architectural treatment. The difference should not be interpreted as Type 5 automatically being a ‘higher safety rating’. The correct type is the one nominated in the approved road or public-domain design.
Yes, where it is part of the approved road-safety and pedestrian-management design. Pedestrian fencing can help guide people toward designated crossing points and discourage direct entry into traffic, which is particularly relevant near schools and busy intersections. The exact fence location, length, setbacks, openings and crossing interfaces should be determined by the responsible traffic or road designer rather than by the fencing supplier alone.
It should not be specified as a vehicle-containment barrier. TfNSW pedestrian fencing is primarily a pedestrian-control device and is not interchangeable with an accepted road safety barrier. Where an errant-vehicle hazard exists, the road designer should assess whether a separate safety barrier is required. The pedestrian fence can then be coordinated with that system to maintain pedestrian guidance, visibility and access.
It can be used on structures where the project design specifically calls for the R0800 fencing configuration and an appropriate mounting detail is provided. Structural applications often require base-plated posts, coordinated fixings and careful interface detailing with concrete edges, waterproofing and other barriers. The bridge or structural engineer should confirm the substrate and fixing arrangement before the fencing package is ordered.
Lead time depends on current stock, project quantity, finish, special components and delivery location. Standard configurations and commonly requested finishes may be available faster than project-specific colours, non-standard panels or large staged packages. For tendering, request a current lead time rather than relying on an old website or previous-project figure, and confirm the programme again when the order is ready to be placed.
